All excellent points. As the CEO of a company producing a "consumer oriented" custom USB PHR I'm well aware of the forces trying to keep EHR's in the hands of providers, government and insurance companys -with consideration of the consumer at the bottom.

Yet it is the consumer who really needs to look out for his/her rights within healthcare delivery systems, making sure your critical healthcare info is available whenever and wherever needed ....and within your control.

Unfortunatley, those promoting a national EHR for everybody have, I believe, a different agenda.

I don't advocate denying Rx to low income people - my point remains there is a limited pot of money and that needs to be allocated for the maximum benefit for as many as possible and that means there must be limits to what is available.
As for contribution to society while I understand.....denying treatment even to those in prison does not seem to have a place in civilized society? Because someone is in jail they should be denied a life saving cancer treatment ? Isn't that the same as capital punishment/murder? I guess that decision would be easy for those in favor of capital punishment which includes many here in the US but for anyone opposed denying treatment would seem to be the same thing maybe just more cruel.

I completely agree with you that there will be abuses to the system - this is very clear and evident in the UK (simply because there are too many immigrants & resident without ethics ready to abuse the NHS). However, just because the system is likely to be abused by some doesn't mean those on low incomes should be denied a life saving treatment because they don't have health insurance. Free Health care needs to be in place for those that contribute to society - the liberals will say everyone is entitled to free health care but should we really care for those that don't contribute any value (rapists, murderers etc).

Good Article though.

It is true that in many cases our diets are sub optimal but the idea that a pill can solve this issue is a misleading. While common sense may suggest a course of action, the improvements in healthcare and in particular our knowledge of healthcare have been driven by science, in particular the Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT). The article cited makes some good points and there is always potential for bias but as more research is carried out the effect of bias is typically reduced and mitigated.
The book - "<a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trick-Treatment-Alternative-Medicine-Trial/dp/0593061292" rel="nofollow">Trick or Treatment - Alternative Medicine on Trial</a>" does an excellent job reviewing the process of understanding the treatment of disease explaining why the science is important and showing how this has been a key element of much of our recent and explosive progress in medical therapy. Adjunct nutritional supplements to counteract specific proven deficiencies makes sense but billions of dollars....the price tag is too high and the data insufficient to justify this level of expenditure.
